    Five Senses Education Portal

    Education portal development with Learning Management Systems integration.

    Highlights

    An Australian educational books and teaching resources publisher with over 40 years of experience in the field of education, approached us to launch a Five Senses Portal. The main goal of it is to simplify access to the digital versions of books for the youngest students. It integrates with the Learning Management Systems through Learning Tools Interoperability standard which provides a seamless experience of accessing books straight from the school accounts. Additionally, it integrates with third party publisher portals where additional materials can be accessed with ease, using the same school account.

    The Australian education system is very well digitized. From the earliest school years, students are provided with laptops/tablets on which they are studying, using various applications. Each student has their own username and password issued by school, which can be used in most of these apps, and especially the LMS system of school choice.     The Cognitum team had to deliver such a portal where any child could login and have access to all the educational materials (pdf/epub versions of digital books, interactive items etc) that the school purchased for them.

    So the main challenge was to integrate all of the elements starting from the ecommerce platform where resources are bought, going through school LMS and ending on the mobile app pdf readers and third party publishers portals.    

    Solution

    Integrations, integrations and more integrations! Thankfully, most of the LMS systems are compatible with the Learning Tools Interoperability(LTI) standard, which lets us seamlessly embed FSPortal straight into the LMS, without a need to redirect users to new tabs, or forcing them to login again. The other standards which enabled seamless integrations with schools and publishers portals are OpenID Connect, SAML and OAuth 2.0. 

    From the user’s point of view, the portal is very easy to use: after you log in you will see a list of books to which you have access. In addition to the electronic book format provided by the publishers, all education materials can be also downloaded and accessed within the FSReader mobile and desktop applications. Thanks to these apps, you can open and read your books offline. 

    Since the integrations were carried out, kids can now log in at the start of the school year and access all the needed books and materials, using a single sign on experience.
